ARE YOU…

scheduling a gig….. planning a CD release party….. going to a networking event…… giving your manager physical copies of your cd…. submitting to a film festival….performing in a show….launching a website with your product for sale on it??????

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, I would like to humbly offer you a bit of advice…DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO DUPLICATE/REPLICATE YOUR PROJECT!!!!!!

I can’t tell you the countless times people come to our door with their “Baby” that they’ve spent countless hours recording, editing, mastering, coddling, cuddling, doing over, agonizing over only to come to us at the very last minute to manufacture it for them.

Believe me no one is ever going to know how awesome your CD or DVD is if you don’t get their attention when they first see the way it is presented. Though we try not to, people do judge books by their cover. That’s where your artwork comes in…..it needs to be designed, by you or your friend, or us. Design takes time….tweaking it takes time….proofreading is a must….

Why spend all this time on your project only to put it in a package that has mistakes on it or not the exact image you wanted because you had to rush it through the last step in order to make your deadline.

Let’s say you are making 1000 copies, well once we get or finish the approved artwork it takes 8-10 business days to make those pieces, we can do it sooner, but then it costs more.

If you know that time frame ahead of time you can certainly work backward from the date you want them and try to set your schedule accordingly. We have just become so used to everything happening at a faster pace we forget that somethings still are better given a little time

It is very important to schedule enough time for the reproduction of your project for a number of reasons however we do understand that life happens and sometimes time slips away…we can certainly get the job done for you, but if you can, give yourself time it opens many doors for you and can save you $$$.

We Know What We Are Doing….Trust Us….We Want Your CDS/DVDS To Come Out Perfect Too!

Here at Play-It we’ve been duplicating/replicating your awesome stuff for over 20 years, and believe it or not we’ve seen the same thing issues come up when you place your order all of these years. So, let me break it down for you so that the world can get its hands on your music or film festival entry in time!

PART I- The Production Master

1. Listen to your Production Master : You would be amazed at how many people come in with a master and want to make 1000 copies, and haven’t even listened to it! Our advice is to listen to the disc in a machine that it was NOT made in. If you burn your disc on your own computer, put it in a CD player and sit back and listen to your jams the way one of your fans would. It just makes sense for you to find out if there are any pops/ glitches/skips etc. etc.

This will also ensure that you haven’t burned a disc that is MP3′s (Which DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT play in a CD Player) instead of Audio. ( We’ve seen that happen quite a few times)

“…..But I Made My Master In A Studio And I Heard It There”

Same rules apply kids! Listen to the master that your amazing engineer made, sometimes the equipment does some funky things….no really, it does.

We are going to give you 100, or 1000, or a gazillion EXACT copies of what you give us, take the 60 minutes to listen and save yourself $$$$ and aggravation.

2. The DVD MASTER- Watch it!

Ok……. you worked your tail off and asked many favors from friends and family to make your film project, take the time to watch the DVD master you want us to copy. Make sure there are no glitches. DVD authoring is sometime tricky. Without a doubt watch your master in a different player than you made it in. Make sure it begins the way you would like it to. Do you want a menu? Do you want it to just fade up from black and just start playing? Do you want it to loop?

If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, then make sure that is what it does.If you can’t get it to do those things, we can author your disc for you.

Watch your master as if you were your audience.

3. Protect Your Master!

When you are traveling through our fair city with your precious cargo, don’t just throw it in your bag or knapsack. Put it in a CD case or a sleeve, this way the bottom won’t get scratched and you won’t introduce a problem.

Next Week- Sending us your Master Electronically

Peace.

Save the date….

February 12th the people in our industry and music lovers all over the world, will either be glued to their televisions or getting ready to watch LL Cool J in person host the 54th Annual Grammy Awards show.

Performers include Adele (in her first live performance since undergoing vocal cord surgery last fall); Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson; Glen Campbell with the Band Perry and Blake Shelton; Coldplay and Rihanna; Foo Fighters; Bruno Mars; Paul McCartney; Nicki Minaj; Katy Perry; Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band; and Taylor Swift.

Ummmm…..awesome!!!!!

In 2011, The Recording Academy announced an overhaul of many Grammy Award categories for 2012.

There used to be 109 categories…now 78.

What did they eliminate…

In the R&B, pop and country fields, male and female performers who have competed separately will now all square off against one another. For Example:

Best Pop Solo Performance

Someone Like You Adele Track from: 21 [XL Recordings/Columbia Records]

Yoü And I Lady Gaga Track from: Born This Way [Streamline/Interscope/Kon Live]

Grenade Bruno Mars Track from: Doo-Wops & Hooligans [Elektra]

Firework Katy Perry [Capitol]

F***in’ Perfect Pink [Jive Records]

(We all know who is gonna win here don’t we?…and well deserved!!!)

Also, several categories for instrumental soloists will be discontinued. Recordings in these categories will now fall under the general categories for best solo performances.

The classical and American roots fields have also lost four categories, and pop, rock, country and Latin each lost three.

In Rap, the categories for best rap soloist and best rap duo or group will be merged a new category. Best Rap Performance

Now there will no longer be separate categories for various regional American music , such as Hawaiian , Native American and Zydeco/Cajun music and Polka. The Recording Academy decided to combine all these music variations into the new Best Regional Roots Music Album

Classical recordings will now only be eligible for the main Album of the Year category.

Several will remain unchanged, such as Dance, Reggae, Traditional Pop, Spoken Word and Comedy. The Crafts field (e.g. Liner Notes, Packaging and Historical Productions) is also unchanged.

I’m sure I missed a bunch, but you get the gist!!!

Lots of artists are unhappy about these changes, but the Grammys defend the cuts. Read the article and weigh in!

Among the many clients we have that vote for the Grammys….one wrote a little article about it. Simeon Sandiford writes…..

What makes a hit record?
I have spent the better part of five decades meddling with various aspects of high-end audio while keeping abreast of the industry’s evolutionary and revolutionary developments. For more than half of those years I have religiously auditioned promotional copies of new releases from audiophile labels distributed by Sanch to determine their suitability for offering to my fussy eclectic clientele.
Over time, I have therefore been able to accumulate a formidable personal collection. This has afforded me the unique opportunity to determine and often predict how different customers would react to myriad diverse genres. Moreover, everyone knows by now that I am very partial to live recordings for a multiplicity of reasons hitherto documented in several published articles.
As a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), I cast my ballot annually in various Grammy categories. The CD An Evening with Dave Grusin instinctively prompted my speculation that it would wend its way to the top of the pyramid for the upcoming 2012 Grammy Awards. Legendary producer Quincy Jones is the only person I know to demand a hit record (We Are the World) from Lionel Richie and the late Michael Jackson. Everyone else just waits patiently until John Public decides. The logical question is what major factors should guide one to conclude that a particular production would become a hit? Here are my personal views…
A hit record should be of concert length duration, sequenced such that its unfolding rivets the listener. Live presentations should permit one to close one’s eyes for teleportation back to the original event. Applause should be spontaneous and natural as this often irritates, sounding like cold bacon sizzling in a hot frying pan. The soundstage should be three-dimensional, balanced, palpable, spacious, and transparent. The aural illusion should be analogous to riding in a vehicle in which the tyres are inflated with nitrogen instead of air. These criteria are ultimately reflected in product sales and shelf-life. So what does all of this have to do with Dave Grusin’s memorable recital?
From the opening bars of Fratelli Chase through the unforgettable Moon River to Memphis Stomp, one feels commandeered by the exquisite fare. The engineering is phenomenal; the repertoire is fabulous with a dream segue of exquisite selections by Henry Mancini, Leonard Bernstein, the Gershwin brothers and Grusin himself. The airy sound of the piano, guest soloists and vocalists deftly accompanied by The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, is absolutely stunning. These attributes make An Evening with Dave Grusin (HUI-31995-02, also available on Blu-ray HUI-32928-09), my unreserved choice for a 2012 Grammy in the fiercely competitive category Best Surround Sound.

So I was running the other day and like most runners, in order to keep myself going at a good pace or to just plain old, not stop, my ears are plugged into my ipod. Now unlike most runners I do NOT have a playlist, I put my ipod on shuffle and let Gods toy with me.

Random singles are among the selections. I started to think about where all of these random singles came from, and it turns out that most of them are songs I heard in movies or television shows. All of this independent music in the background of scenes with characters that I care about, moving story lines along, creating a music video within. It is a stroke of genius!

So listen up all you Indie Artists out there…here are few tips on how to get your music in Film or TV!

1. Find a Music Supervisor. Try the Music Business Registry or All Music Industry Contacts. These are not the only places but they are awesome start. There is a TON contact info in both of these places for many different music industry related subjects so check them out.

2. Find out what kind of music they are looking for, do your research make sure your music is right for their field.

3. Find out how they like the music submitted. Do they like MP3′s? If so, make sure you include the name of the track! If they want a physical disc, package it in a standard Jewel case, one that has a spine. These discs will be stored, you don’t want it to disappear in the pile. Make sure your name can be seen.

Also, add some color or artwork. Imagine getting 200 submissions a day. Now imagine it’s after lunch and you are feeling a little sluggish. What is going to get your attention, the CD with the magic marker written info, or the one that has a story to tell before I even listen to it. Pique their interest, after all you are selling…..you!

4. Make sure you list all of you tracks. There is a common misconception out there that if put your disc in your computer, open itunes and type all of the info in, it will come up like that on all computers…not true! It will only come up that way on your computer. In order to have your music come up in itunes it needs to be registered in the great database in the sky…Gracenote….

By the way, whether you have your CDs replicated/duplicated at Play-it Productions or not, registering your album/song in Gracenote is a service we provide. This way, no matter who puts your album in their computer, all of the track info will appear.

5. Follow up, but DO NOT pester them!

There is a lot of info out there on how much you can make, if you should get representation, even how to become a music supervisor etc etc.

Look it up, learn and submit!

Hey who knows, I could be running my next 5K listening to you!

Peace.

Sitting here listening to Vince Guaraldi’s “Charlie Brown Christmas” on Spotify….all my Facebook friends now know what I’m listening to. Can they tell my mood based on my song choices that post to Facebook??? So, now not only do you know where I am am and what I’m doing, but now you might know my mood……..where is the sense of fair play in that?

You could say, ” well don’t post”…but there is something satisfying about it, isn’t there? Do we know a bit too much about each other? Are we too connected too much of the time??? Is it just a way of life to the generation behind me? They will probably think I am being ridiculous to even question it…

there is a theory out there that we are all one, maybe this is the way it starts………

I’ve Missed Madonna!!

According to Theweek.com

Madonna is staging another music comeback. The singer signed a new three-album deal yesterday with Interscope Records, for which she’ll earn a base of $1 million per album. (She split with her longtime label, Warner Brothers Records, in 2007.) She also announced that the first of those three albums will be released in March 2012, soon after her high-profile Super Bowl halftime performance. Madonna’s last album, 2008′s Hard Candy, was one of her least successful yet, and her latest directorial effort, the film W.E., has been ravaged by critics. Are the odds of a comeback stacked against her?

Personally…I can’t wait!!!

we have clients all over the world…here is some news from Trinidad… Steel drum news!!

Directors: Sarah L. Sandiford, Rhona L. Sandiford, Simeon L. Sandiford (Managing)
Pete the Panstick and you
After five years of meticulous Research and Development, Pete the Panstick (PETE) interactive educational software will be ready for commercial online delivery to end users from the first quarter of 2012. Technical support from CDE (a joint European Union-African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries initiative) is hereby acknowledged. Corporate customers such as schools, academic institutions and libraries will be afforded the opportunity of hosting this innovative, self-instructional product on their servers for internal distribution through Local Area Networks. PETE is now compatible with Windows or Macintosh operating systems.
PETE’S new Infomercial is very insightful. He begins by showing you how to recognise note placement and memorise musical scales using his (virtual) Steelpan on your computer. As a result, when you play your (real) Steelpan by mimicking PETE’S animation, you will thrill as you master the simple Rhymes and Folk Songs that are provided as your introductory material.
With the aid of commonly available music programmes such as Sibelius or Finale and technical assistance from your assigned tutor, you will eventually be able to competently perform more sophisticated melodies. These will be available from PETE’S extensive library being created for this application at three levels of difficulty – elementary, intermediate and advanced.
By navigating six fulfilling chapters with PETE, you will discover intricacies about the Steelpan’s fascinating History through three short movies and twelve illustrated posters. He introduces ten Steelpan virtuosos who arrange many genres including Panorama and facilitates a two-tiered, multiple-choice Steelpan Quiz. For recess, PETE allows you to audition an array of seven selected genres of Steelpan recordings before returning to his intriguing world of animation.
The Spanish adaptation of PETE already exists and will be launched as soon as sufficient field experience has been gained with this English version. PETE’S expanding portfolio will soon encompass the Quantitative Sciences. He is already strategically poised to assist you in overcoming myriad perennial challenges traditionally associated with Mathematics and Physics.
Imagine this alluring, animated Panstick using nothing but charisma and first principles to demystify innumerable complex hypotheses that have baffled students from time immemorial. Sir Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein and their illustrious colleagues must be smiling! Visit www.sanch.com for further information on your engaging experience in music education.

Never leave home without it…

I’m not so sure that tag line belongs to your Amex anymore. It belongs to your phone… and I use the term “phone” loosely. Our phones are with us at all times and they can do anything! There is an app for everything. Maybe someone should invent an app that tells us what apps aren’t available yet.

Serious musicians are entering a whole new world when it comes to apps. Forget us iphone/ipad users that “iplay” drums, piano or (can you believe) the flute. There is an app out there that called Cleartune. This app will help you tune your instrument. There are apps that mix your music, microphones that attach to your phone that can record your gig, virtual amps, audio editing, multi track recorders, vocal corrections, sampling and more, the list goes on forever!! What does this mean for the future of music??? Like the future of all we have known, it will be interesting to see where we are when the dust settles. I love moving forward, but I want to leave true talent for the truly talented. For those of you who have heard me sing, there is an app out there that will make me sound awesome…even I don’t think that is fair.

and the Oscar goes to…

Client news…

Our new client RUMUR has exciting news!!! Their new film “Battle for Brooklyn” just made the sort list for the OSCARS!!!! Congratulations!!! So awesome. I took a quick look at the film when we received it for duplication and I have to say It drew me in immediately. Check it out!!! Spread the word and watch this!!

$$$$$$

Say you have a project that you truly believe in and have no funding….have you ever thought “if I could just get 5 bucks from everyone I know I could fund this thing”…..well guess what……you can get five bucks from people you know and don’t know! Kickstarter.com is the site for you!! I first heard of this on Facebook, a friend of mine needed funding for a project…since then I have funded 3 projects and I am happy to do so plus I am getting first dibs on finished product or getting it for free! You can pick how much you want to contribute and your credit card doesn’t get charged until all of the funds have been pledged. The person who is asking for the $ has to provide proof that the funds did indeed go to the project. Everyday I see a project that I might be interested in and have the opportunity to help. If you need help getting something off the ground, check out this site and get all criteria needed to get started.

That’s all for now, gotta do some holiday shopping!

Peace

CRANBERRIES

With the holidays hurtling towards us I started thinking “menus” for our family and friends’ get-togethers. I started pondering the age old question……which cranberry sauce reigns supreme? I usually put 2 different kinds out, the canned ridgy, slicey one and the one that looks like someone made it. Here’s where I’m going with this….. If you are like me, you can’t ever say the word Cranberries without having the song Zombie go through your head, I mean don’t we all think about the group? So, like any good human, I Googled it for fun…guess what I read on their website!!!!????

‘Roses’ is the forthcoming sixth studio album by The Cranberries, and is scheduled for release early 2012. Produced by Stephen Street and recorded in May 2011 in Toronto and London, this will be the band’s first studio release in ten years.

‘Roses’ is scheduled for release on February 14th, 2012, and will be released on Downtown Records<—–Play-it’s client!!!!/Cooking Vinyl in the United States, and on Cooking Vinyl worldwide.

Happy Autumn! My personal favorite season….. Lot’s going on in our neck of the woods….

First and foremost, Congratulations to our long time client Asgerdur Sigurdardottir, for her Latin GRAMMY Producer nomination for Best Classical Album!!! TÁRREGA! featuring internationally renowned guitarist Manuel Barrueco The winner will be announced at the 12th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards celebration, to be held in Las Vegas on November 10, 2011.
TÁRREGA! contains compositions and arrangements by the Spanish composer and guitarist, Francisco Tárrega. “TÁRREGA!” is available on www.TonarMusic.com.
Please contact Asgerdur Sigurdardottir at Orders@TonarMusic.com for more information.

Chances are if you are an accomplished guitar player you hold the Gibson close to your heart….Eric Clapton, B.B. King, and Jimmy Page certainly seem to…..Federal marshals raided the Gibson Guitar Corporation in Tennessee and not for the first time. The government appears to be preparing to charge Gibson with trafficking in illegally obtained wood. Wow….seems so weird that the makers of musical instruments that have been the catalysts to changing the social politics of every generation and are allies of Greenpeace could be hurting the environment. According to the WSJ.com website, The Lacey Act of 1900, originally passed to regulate trade in bird feathers used for hats and amended in 2008 to cover wood and other plant products. It requires companies to make detailed disclosures about wood imports and bars the purchase of goods exported in violation of a foreign country’s laws. Gibson’s predicament, which raises concerns for musical instrument makers and other importers of wood, illustrates the pitfalls of complying with U.S. law while dealing with middlemen in faraway countries whose legal systems can be murky. Hopefully this will all get straightened out and we can play on feeling groovy and green!

Michael Stipe weaving his way through cars in a traffic jam while we got to spy on the individuals’ personal pain in their cars was an unforgettable video on MTV when I was growing up. BUT……Losing My Religion was the BEST!!! Unrequited love makes the best subject matter don’t ya think??? Alternative rock pioneers, they introduced us to something else and we loved it!!! Now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this band put out some music we will never forget. Though I must admit I lost touch with R.E.M, what with Alanis and Gaga waving at me, their catalog of music is incredible and I don’t change the station when I hear that mandolin. So, now they call it quits, and though it isn’t the end of the world as we know it, ( get it? wink wink) I’m hoping they have things to say on the own.

Peace.

Ummmm…….What? An Earthquake?

Like a typical New Yorker, I’m already over it. I did however, hear tale that Californians were making fun of us because we made such a big deal about it and to them…. its old hat. OK west coast, don’t even TRY to compete with “rolling with the punches” attitude. I’m not 100% sure you’d make it through Times Square at the height of our tourist season, oh yeah, which happens to be EVERYDAY, without losing an article of clothing and your wallet.

Walk through Penn Station at 5:30 on a weekday while eveyone is running to catch their train….that’ll either put hair on your chest or make you weep silently in a corner.

So ease up on the attitude and give us kudos for making it through our first plate breaker with New York style. We’ve posted lots of pics of the earthquake devastation, like knocked over yogurt cups and beach chairs on their side.

I Heart Facebook…..really not only for the best birthdays, but for the random postings that I see of videos and news articles.

Watching Criminal Minds, CSI, Deadly Women, Wicked Attraction, Anatomy of a Serial Killer, The Predictions of Nostradamus and 2012, can really put a damper a girls spirits. But, then I saw this video posted on FB and I felt like I better start watching something else. AARP had a Video contest and this video came in 2nd place…it’s awesome Click here to watch and I dare you not to love it!

So now that we survived a natural disaster and there seems to be hope for future…let’s PARTY!

Check out the shows below!

Aniden Interactive was asked to produce a concert DVD capturing the performance. “The Ron Helman Jazz Ensemble is proud to have performed at The Lensic Theater and we’re very happy to have a DVD to commemorate the concert. Kudos to Aniden!” says Ron Helman.

This newest production from Inverse Theater – “Best Downtown Theater Company” (NY Press) and “Brooklyn’s Finest Experimentalists” (Time Out NY) – tells the story of The New Cigarette, a one time “freeform chamber punk” band from Gowanus that came and went so fast it basically destroyed everything in its path. Using live music, video, dance and prepared audio, the show explores the outer reaches of so-called “new music” and features a steady cast of Kirk Wood Bromley (three time FringeNYC Award winner), Leah Schrager (Center for Contemporary Art), Beth Griffith (John Cage), and Peter Schmitz (Yanira Castro). Different visiting musicians appear nightly (see below). Come smoke The New Cigarette, and then try to walk home.
